Information

Please see information below from which you can choose what is relevant to your travel situation. Normally if the amount of medicine does not exceed the amount on the prescription to cover a short trip, there should not be a problem. However, you must declare to the Jamaican Customs ALL prescription medication, accompanied by a doctor’s prescription and signed doctor’s note on arrival in Jamaica.

If your medications contain certain controlled substances, e.g., narcotics, psychotropics, cannabis, you will need to apply for a permit from the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Jamaica (MOHW), prior to travelling.

Otherwise you may travel with your usual medication in reasonable quantities for personal consumption during your stay, along with original prescription and original containers of medicines with pharmacy labels with names and quantities in the containers.   If you are in doubt, here is the information to apply for a permit from the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Jamaica:   ** Persons travelling with Controlled Drugs should apply for a travel permit from the Standards & Regulations Division of the Ministry of Health and Wellness of Jamaica (MOHW) when travelling with medication containing controlled substances by the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB): these include narcotics, psychotropics and cannabis substances.

In order to obtain this permit the following is required:

1. Formal request  detailing the request. For a minor or disabled person, the request is to be made by guardian or caregiver.

2. Travel itinerary (dates of travel, airline & flight numbers etc.)

3. Address where the traveller intends to stay while in Jamaica .

4. Letter from the attending physician outlining medical history, current medications, etc.

5.       Current and Valid Prescription

6.       Copies of photos showing all aspects of labels attached to cannabis-based medications to be brought in

7.       List of the specific controlled medications (and their quantities) that the patient intends to carry   Contact information.

Persons travelling with medications not in the above category are encouraged to have a copy of their prescriptions, and have all medications presented in an adequately-labelled container, preferably the original or hospital-dispensed container.
